這幾天上了導航學覺得很有收穫,學到很多實務應用的東西,像wind correction angle, glide angle等,原理很複雜但算式很簡單,給pilot速算用。今天還學到一個降落的技巧,rate of descend速度與下降率的關係。知道這個可以直接推算下沉率,幫助增加降落的技巧。難怪我以前玩flight simulator都降得不好,因為都隨便降落,而且很難對準跑道,其實有很多技巧可以幫助降落,像二紅二白燈表示在合適的下降軌跡、ILS的信號表示飛機與跑道的相對位置,根據ILS來修正飛機姿態。還有很多很多……

奇跡咖啡館

今天我一個大學室友來桃園找我,說要去台茂打棒球。天氣真的很熱我本來只想去台茂裡面吹氣逛街而已,可是他說要去竹圍漁港看看,就開車過去那邊。跟一般的漁港一樣,我覺得有點髒亂,而且沒有特別的東西,倒是我們在長堤外面坐了一會兒,吹海風、看夕陽,還有看飛機降落,今天是24跑道起降,所以竹圍港這邊可以看到飛機降落,很近很清楚,一整個飛機排隊近場大多是長榮跟華航的飛機,國泰、新航各一架,還有一架LogoJET的不知名飛機。坐久了,海風滿是黏黏的空氣,加上天氣很悶熱,一下子就滿身汗了。之後我們又到國際路上的「奇跡」咖啡館,位於台1529公里處,這裡曾經是華航大園空難的現場,在事件發生數年後老闆回到故鄉開設奇跡咖啡館,提供了一個地方讓一般人看飛機看個過癮,也可以喝咖啡聊是非。我們到的時候已經接近傍晚,在夕陽的照射之下光線顯得更柔和,拍照也很漂亮。越接近夜色機場燈光打開之下,看到又是不同的景象,飛機的Logo燈把飛機照得光彩輝煌,真的很美,難怪這家咖啡店這麼有名。來這邊欣賞飛機最好的時間是下午三點過後,陽光較為舒服不會過於炎熱,在點一杯咖啡,輕輕鬆鬆看飛機話家常,渡過假日的時光也是相當不錯的唷。

今天我跟大姐姐夫媽媽他們去吃心月日本料理,心月在信義區商圈,基隆路跟信義路那邊,小小的一家店,中午幾乎高朋滿座,都是西裝筆挺的客人,很有商業氣氛。

價錢有三種,480, 680, 880都是套餐,記得是前菜、手捲、生魚片、燉魚、烤蝦、牛小排、鮭魚飯、湯、甜點、茶,相當的日式風格,餐點都很精緻但不多,出菜的速度也不慢,重點是很好吃。尤其是烤蝦,加上了一種特別的醬料,我最喜歡這一道。

吃完我們去新光三越選購侯小丞的鞋子,一進去兒童館就被Thomas小火車迷住了,還有甲蟲王者,天啊!一堆小朋友都在玩甲蟲王者的機器,怎麼這一代這麼喜歡甲蟲?侯小丞早就忘了今天是要來買鞋子的,騙了好久終於哄他去試穿鞋子,充滿著不甘願。買鞋子途中又跑去看皮卡丘,神奇寶貝不是很久了嗎?從我高中到現在居然還有耶。買完鞋子又回來買他的最愛Thomas火車系列spancer,真的是小孩子,最後逛完後就坐在車上滿足的睡著了。

當我飛的越高,離我的朋友們越遠。

不知道是不是整個禮拜待在公司的關係,最近越來越少跟朋友們連絡。

以前遇到挫折我都更努力向上,讓我的條件更好。可是漸漸的發現,當我越飛越高,反而離朋友們越來越遠,彼此之間更少有交集。我比較不喜歡交新朋友,一但漸漸與原本很熟識的朋友遠離,生活就變得無趣,感覺好像失去了很重要的東西。

什麼時候受訓完成?在我們退休的那一天。

學無止境,從一開始踏進公司開始受訓到退休,每天都在學習。永遠有新的東西要接受,現在累積的都是我們的知識,對以後的工作多少有幫助。每到一個階段又要學另一個階段的知識,所以永遠學不完。

Always learn and live.

 

上線五年後就開始厭倦,要找到飛下去的動力。

今天去找一個機師clay,這是我第三次去他們家了,即使他很喜歡飛機,上線五年後也漸漸的失去了熱誠,把飛行當作一份工作而已。

要怎麼保持繼續飛下去的動力,真的很難!

導航學教了flight computer的東西,不是真的計算機,而是一個像圓盤的東西,用來快速換算航空需要的數據,原本我們要用計算機複雜換算的公式,現在完全靠這個flight computer就可以簡單精鬆得知。

 

知道導航公式原理之後,再來學如何使用flight computer,覺得發明這個東西真是厲害,一個個不起眼的數值經過轉動之後居然巧妙的轉換出需要的資料。

 

 

 

現在知道為什麼飛行手錶會賣得這麼貴,上面就有flight computer刻度,放在手錶上很方便,尤其飛行電腦故障又臨時找不到flight computer時。

這兩天準備小考,要背的東西太多,感覺頭漲漲的,已經飽和塞不下還得硬塞,頭腦很累。看來得要找一個適合自己的記憶方法,才能減輕期中考的負擔。考完試今天晚上全班要到外面吃飯,趁機放鬆一下。

This week I came back to hometown 彰化 for replacing my new drive license and the changing owner on the bill of my mobile phone but I found my desk computer is not working. I don’t know what cause that but I guess it’s too old to work. It was bought 7 years ago when I was a sophomore of the university, this computer stayed with me so long and I can’t abandon it very easily because lots of my homework, papers, pictures and something memorable are stored in the hard-disk. Especially that screen, it had worked more than 10 years old because my sister bought it and sent it to me when I entered the university. So it is farewell time, I take out the hard disk, CD-ROM and discard it. Although I bought a brand-new notebook now but I want to copy the memorable files in my old computer’s disk because I don’t lost the records of my life.

 

My grand-father

After one week raining days, my parent, my nephew and I went to 水里 to visit my grand father and my aunts in this sunny day. My grand father is 93 years old and his body is so strong like a 60 years old man. I remembered my grand father was a farmer when he was young, as a result, he usually walk to his fruit farm in the mountain by his own foot. Everyday he waked up so early and had a very regular life style and caused his body is very strong and healthy now. Actually I am not very familiar with my grand father until I saw he was crying in my grand mother’s funeral last year. It’s first time I see him crying and impressed me very much. I realize he was sad at that moment, so was me.

Now he is very proud of me can be a pilot trainee in EVA, and will be a captain in a few years. My grand father is one of the people I respect. Although I came back only one or two time a year maybe less in these two years, but I like him as my parent. He is a happy man because all of the next generations are very filial. May he enjoy his life in the future and be happy forever.

Mel Gibson’s BraveHeart

I’d recommend this movie to everyone, it’s a brave and love story about William Wallace, hero of Scottish. Mel was the director and acted role as Wallace in this movie. This movie also won the best movie of the Oscar Award in 1995. I was touched immediately when watching it at first time on screen. I respect Scottish historical hero-William Wallace not only his leading fight against the tyranny of England but also his love story, all events were caused because English lord killed his wife. His spirit encouraged every Scotsman to win a freedom country of theirs.

The last words he saidFreedom in the execution place touched many people at that moment, even the English were crying because they saw a man being brave rather than they thought. Although Wallace was a betrayer for them and killed their son or husband in the war-field several years ago, they changed their attitude from hate to compassion at last. Because they never see a prisoner is so strong and brave that can endure such kind of pain during the most awful torture in England.

In spite of this story is made up by Randall Wallace, not 100 percent matches the history. I guess many people do believe it is true one, especially the Scotsman.

今天又去玩了一下模擬飛行,跟上次一樣的場景、天氣、降落任務。其實我發現所謂飛得好與不好,跟手眼協調能力穩定與不穩定有關。大家都有玩過倒三角的遊戲,把一隻竹竿頂在手上,就是一個自動控制系統,發現了竹竿偏右,就會自然的往右修正。做的越細膩,竹竿左右偏轉的動作就越來越小,也就越穩定。相反的,修正的角度越大或反應時間太慢,竹竿就偏轉的越大,直到倒下來。開飛機也是一樣,可以做到越細小的動作,飛機就越穩定,換句話說,做任何動作前要抓前置量,這很重要,決定是否能趨於穩定或趨於不穩定就在於前置量的多寡。有些人天生俱有這種能力就很適合當機師。

 

戀香sense of love

剛看了戀香金承天跟尹香之告白那段,覺得每個人都有一個屬於自己的另一半,是為了找到他/她,才來到這個世界上。每次看到這段都讓我很感動,雖然我自己還沒有找到另一半,但我還是堅信一定可以找到。如果真的很喜歡,一定會有毅力堅持下去,因為那才叫做真愛。遇到喜歡的一定要嘗試追求,不然怎麼知道會不會成功,雖然感情這種東西太重緣分,它不是數學,1+1不會等於2,是不能強求的,也沒有所謂一定。所以,喜歡就大膽追,得失心不要太重,生活就會快樂一點。

One of my friend met in Oct. two years ago Wayne is back. He is EVA 28 ab-initial, just come back from U.S.  I know him because we had the same day interview and paper-test, but I entered in the army after passing the test. He continued to join EVA and finished the ground school course. Also get the commercial pilot license of the FAA. Now he is an advanced trainee, ready for simulator and fleet transition training. Sooner or later, he will finish all training course and become a FO in the cockpit. Congratulate to him can pass a long way challenge.

 

After swimming 6 circles of the swimming pool, I feel exhausted. How would my body feel so tired today? Maybe, first I slept too late last night. Second, I paid too much concentration in class this morning. Too tired to get up from the bed after showering, not only me but my classmate feel the same. What a tired day and I still have to study in classroom tonight.

Yesterday I was exhausted and need to rest early. After talking to Teresa, I went to bed at 1130 and wake up at 0620, enjoy a super relaxed rest but no sweet dream. Anyway, it’s a wonderful sleeping until this morning.

 

We had an interesting chapter of the navigation this morning. It’s how to calculate the distance from Taipei to New York or to London according to the Napier’s rule. I admired those scientists who contribute their research whole life to human milestone in order to develop a theory or discover a phenomenon in nature. Such as Newton, the most famous scientist in 18th century, he is either a genius or a hardworking man because of his famous calculus theory development in mathematics and the gravity discovery in physics that push the science forward a giant step.

When I studied in the institute, I was trained how to do a research step by step and practice the logic theory. Therefore, I know how hard to develop a theory oneself. My professor told me if you want to study a subject very deeply, you have to strength two phases including MATH and PHYSICS, called auger. And the computer programming is the bit.

4th week

FAA exams

It says we will have an exam of the FAA licenses after we arrive in U.S.  How to prepare this exam is a big problem for us. But our instructor Wayne told us there is a book called “bible” to every pilot which includes more than 1,000 questions and answers. So don’t worry about it. It’s something like we do now practice the questions and memorize the answers as more as possible. I can realize that as a pilot doesn’t need to have a very detail analysis of how to design a device such as electronic cable, fuel tank or fly by wire. But pilots must know how to use them. Pilot-trainee has too much subjects to learn and it’s hard to emphasis every subject very well. As a result, most of the pilot is a man knows how to DRIVE an airplane but doesn’t actually have an idea of how many devices will be involved when turn on a button or a panel.

Something came into my mind instantly, background is very important. A student graduated from aerospace engineering department in university will have more common concepts of how airplanes are designed than others. That means if one can have both knowledge of pilot-trainee and aeronautical engineer then he will be a very professional pilot.

 

FO and maintainer bargains

As mentioned who has both degree of aeronautical engineer and flight-trainee will be a professional pilot. Here is a situation: before taking off, a pilot will leave a signature on the paper if he conform all maintenance processes are qualified. Very often the airplane has problems need to be re-checked by the ground maintainer but they want to neglect it because they consider it is a small problem that won’t influent the flight safety. At this situation, if a FO (first officer) has no enough knowledge or experience, then he will follow the maintainer advices instead of making a final decision himself. That’s extreme dangerous behavior. All decisions should be made by the pilot-in-command finally, even the maintainer is very confident with their technique and experience. Because pilots will take responsibility to every passengers and they are on the airplane. In short words, a professional captain should do his best to gain knowledge as not only a pilot but also an aeronautical engineer.

First quiz

We will have the first quiz of meteorology today. Many of classmates focus on this exam very much because no one wishes to fail it. As a result, everyone study hard in these two days. With time goes by, more and more subjects need to be memorized. I wonder how many spaces I can store these information in my head?  But the only way can enforce us to learn the concept in mind deeply is exam. Memorize every word and every sentence on the text book is the best way to get high score.

 

Today is my elder sister’s birthday. Happy birthday to her.

Another two day self – study

These two days are more relaxed than yesterday. We study ourselves all day. After meteorology quiz, we are more confident because it’s not as hard as we think, even too easy. We are too nervous facing the first quiz. But we have another quiz next WednesdayFlight Instrument. Although I had read this subject in university but actually I already forgot it after graduated many years ago. This subject contains the most items to memory so far. For example, there are six definitions of airspeed in ASI in every specific flight condition. And ASI is the only one of the six main flight instruments in cockpit. I can’t image how many definitions or functions of each gauges and circuits we will learn and to remember (one B747 has more than 20 monitors and 100 buttons in cockpit). Fortunately, we now learn is single engine plane, only a few basic functions and it is much easier to understand.

It is raining now outside. What a May raining season, I never see the sun from Sunday. The shower is heavy like a waterfall when last night I came back from crew dormitory to training building. My goodness, the umbrella is useless and trousers is wet hence I have to take a hot-water shower immediately.

3rd week

又是一個Blue Monday,很早就要起床,精神不好有點想睡覺,就當作隨時可以調整生理時鐘。每次上完課都可以獲得一些新觀念或有趣的東西,覺得很充實,心情也跟著愉快了起來。

 

Background越扎實的機師,臨場反應越快,處理能力越強。升IP機會越高。不然只是一個會開飛機的driver

 

Wayne老師上的課是basic knowledge of airplane,老實說對我們只是入門課程,不需要學的很深入,當作是common sense來學。通常來說background學得好的人,臨場反應也比較好,緊急處理能力越強。但不一定每個機師都需要,即使沒有很精通也是可以當機師,但就只是個純飛飛機的pilot而已,想要當Instructor Pilot的人,background一定要學的很好,因為不僅要飛,還要教學員怎麼飛。

 

到底我們跟計程車司機有什麼不同之處?這個問題從面試一直問到現在。

 

General aviation 越發達的國家,要飛到747的機會就越少。這就跟僧多粥少的道理一樣。

 

今天我又聽到了一個不一樣的論點:

話說雖然老外學飛很簡單,但是要飛到大型民航客機就不是每個人都有機會的。通常老外高中畢業就去學飛行,拿cpl執照不用多久,但之後就要慢慢累積時數,(在這中間可以當飛行教官)飛個幾年之後,才有條件可以到航空公司轉訓當FO,但因為美國的航空公司不夠多,所以大都跑到國外航空公司(像長榮),然後累積時數夠久,有機會的話再回到美國的航空公司轉訓當Captain。這是比較順利的過程,因為競爭激烈,所以即使有些人拿到cpl執照,飛小飛機也達到一定時數,一直苦無機會飛民航客機。

而航空公司培訓的ab-initial一旦拿到cpl執照後,回台灣就是直接轉訓飛B747,B777。只要培訓上線之後,就直接當FO。比較起來,雖然我們學飛時間慢了點,要走的路卻直得多。

 

 

長榮文化  紀律飛安效率

 

不曉得外界對長榮的文化有什麼認知?飛安第一,這塊招牌成為長榮的金字招牌,加上紀律,以及工作效率。我們公司愛用社會新鮮人,一旦進到長榮之後,受到公司的影響而接受長榮文化,因為沒有在其他公司待過,不知道別家公司的文化,所以無從比較,一來就很認份的工作。二來造成了大家都是乖乖牌的形象。但有一個缺點就是大家同質性太高了,每個人的想法、作法都一樣,缺少了創新的思維、特異獨行的想法,所以整個公司感覺起來保守許多。

 

聽說長榮組員進機場一定是機長、副機長在前,空服員在後面跟著,整齊的走過去,這也是長榮文化之一。給別人的感覺就是這家公司的組員很有向心力,效率很好,紀律很好,所以覺得長榮飛安很好。

如何能維持自己對飛行的熱誠?

 

話說飛行員的生活表面上精采,可以到世界各地去玩,但有一些事情是你沒辦法控制的,例如排班:不管在哪家公司都一樣,常常會聽到有MD11飛航員抱怨這個月又有很爛的班,一個月可能要飛好幾趟安格拉治,第一次去會很新鮮,第二次還有點興趣,一個月連續去好幾次就不好玩了。而且MD11貨機機隊通常都是深夜起飛,很慘,沒有空服員不說,跟老外機長又沒有交集,到了目的地也是住在飯店把自己關起來,各過各的生活,等下次排飛的時候再回來。即使再怎麼有熱誠,時間久了,現實環境一定會改變想法,到那時候的堅持也許只是為了一份工作而已。只能說工作都有快樂的一面,也有辛苦的一面。

 

A330機隊飛日本、東南亞短程航線,這種班通常是早上八、九點起飛,下午回來,這航線就可以照顧家庭生活,變成上下班的時段。

 

B747,B777機隊,用於美國、歐洲長程航線,一出去飛個三四天,一個月飛三趟,這航線就是典型的機師生活。

 

MD90機隊,國內線,每天上下班,一天飛好幾個起降,但大多數都不喜歡這種,感覺跟國道客運司機很像。

 

但誰也不知道最後會分到哪個機隊?都是到時候視公司人力資源決定。

It’s another blue day because yesterday is Dragon Boat Festival. I have to adjust my body clock again which result of I go to bed at 5:30 in the early morning today. It’s a little bit hard to follow the regular life style. Actually I was used to act at night; I like to study at midnight since I was a senior high school student. Enjoy the silence can release my pressure and cure my soul. That is why I always awake at night on vacations.

 

This week is a happy week because we have only two days course, one holiday and two days self-study all day which is due to the ORAL report of EVA adv-37 on Thursday and Friday. Not bad but easily to fall asleep when self-study.

 

When I came back last night, I met 5 classmates on bus. Hence, most of the seats back of the bus were occupied by us. We had pleasant chat with each other on bus. We are a group live, study, exercise and share together every weekday. I guess my classmates will be my best friends after 8 month (of course back from U.S.) just like my college friends.

 

I am a lucky boy doing something I am interested and now on my way forward to fly-dream step by step. I must treasure what I have owned now and do my best. Not only for myself but also for my family, friends and those people who had ever give me a favor.

 

Chart:

We were assigned to help FTS arrange the flight chart this afternoon. I had to say this is one of EVA cultural, always need us (the newest-coming staff) to do something that is not our own job. Last time we were sent to brush the Daily-Counter carpet in 2nd floor. The manager wanted us to do such kind of job is because most of the stains on the carpet were caused by the PILOT (our elder brother), as a result, if we had ever brush the stain on the carpet we will never make the same mistakes like this. That is called “learning by experience”.

After finish our job in FTS, we went back to classroom and watching an interesting video “PPM video”. This is introduce of Private Pilot Manual. Watch this video need to pay much concentration to listen English, like the Discovery channel. Most of our classmates feel bored and fall sleeping very soon. But I like this, not only improve my English listen ability but review the content on textbook. After this, I know my English is not good enough as a pilot. Need to practice more.

It’s Friday, another raining day. We had 4 hours Meteorology class this morning. I respect our instructor that she can stand 4 hrs continuous and never be tired. Although stay in the classroom all day is a suffering, but I learned many new concepts of meteorology, like how will clouds form initially? Why we see fog in the early morning? I finally realized the basic physical phenomenon from a scientific analysis. As a professional pilot, he must have good sense of meteorology to avoid aircraft flying into any dangerous situation. Therefore, it’s really an interesting and practical subject.

 

(When we learned the humidity measurement-Hygrometer, it recalled my memory immediately. I remembered when I was in military service, there is a Hygrometer in front of the commander’s room. It has two thermometers, one is dry bulb and the other is wet. I know how to evaluate the humidity but don’t know why? That’s a great gain.)
